An introduction to the Future of the Legal Profession Workstream 4

Workstream 4 focuses on helping the Singapore legal profession harness artificial intelligence in a practical, responsible and professionally grounded manner. As AI tools become increasingly integrated into legal research, drafting, document review, contract analysis and other forms of legal work, the priority is to ensure that lawyers are equipped to use these tools with competence, judgment and appropriate supervision.
SAL’s efforts in this area build on a growing body of sector-specific guidance, including both editions of SAL’s Prompt Engineering Guide and SAL’s contributions to the Ministry of Law’s Guide for using Generative AI in the legal sector. These resources provide practical guidance on the effective use of AI while reinforcing the enduring importance of professional responsibility, confidentiality, accuracy and accountability.
Beyond guidance, SAL is developing programmes and engagement platforms to support capability-building across the profession. Through initiatives such as TechLaw.Fest, the Legal Profession Symposium, roundtables and focus groups, SAL continues to gather ground perspectives on AI adoption and identify emerging opportunities and challenges facing legal practitioners.
The articles and resources in this chapter explore how AI is reshaping legal practice, legal training and client expectations, while highlighting practical approaches to responsible adoption. Together, they aim to support a profession that can benefit from AI’s potential while preserving the judgment, integrity and professional standards that remain central to legal practice.
